October 6-9, 2010: 9th Congress of the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture, in Lleida, Spain

The Spanish Society for Organic Farming SEAE will organise its 9th Scientific Congress on organic farming in Lleida, the agricultural capital of Catalonia, October 6 to 9, 2010, to be held at the University of Lleida (UDL).

SEAE has been organising this event since 1994, to exchange research results and advances in agriculture, livestock and organic food and its contribution to sector development, forming a space for dialogue and discussion of industry players, generator of ideas and future projects.

The 2010 congress highlights the contribution of this sector to the "Quality and Food Safety", as Catalonia is the region, where most organic food is consumed in Spain.

Organic farming contributes to the maintenance of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, combating water scarcity and creating rural employment. 

The congress is organized in different sessions or panels that will address different topics such as:

  • Development cooperation and globalization;
  • Biodiversity and cultivation practices;
  • Plant production and comparative studies;
  • Plant health, soil fertility and plant nutrition;
  • Marketing, consumption and distribution food
  • Processing and food quality;
  • Livestock;
  • Animal welfare and beekeeping;
  • Policy support for organic agriculture;
  • Action Plans;
  • Legislation, regulations and certification;
  • Training, research and consultancy, rural development, climate change.

Deadline to submit abstracts is March 31, 2010.  

The aims of this Congress are:

a) to exchange knowledge, research results between researchers, technicians and operators;

b) to demonstrate / introduce and discuss the implications of recent research findings on organic agricultural production;

c) to discuss methods of transfer and application of technological innovations to organic operators, stakeholders and other representatives of groups that support organic agriculture;

d) to set policies for organic agricultural production, in terms of quality and food safety based on science.

The participation of around 350 to 400 participants is expected (researchers, technicians and advisers, teachers, students, traders, related organizations, etc.), coming from Spain and the European Union countries, especially from the Mediterranean countries. A large group is expected from Latinamerica that will also attend the fifth Iberoamerican Meeting on Agroecology, a biennial parallel event organized by SEAE since 2002, to increase the exchange of research results with counterparts on that continent.

Apart from SEAE in the organisation of the Congress following entities are actively participating:

  • the Agronomy Engineers High Level School (ETSEAE)
  • Catalunya Research and Technology Transfer (IRTA) from Lleida.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Agriculture Rural Action (DAR) from the Catalonian Government, the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM), the City of Lleida, the Lleida County Council and La Caixa.

Further entities are collaborating in the organization are: Catalonian Council of Organic Agricultural Producció (CCPAE), Agroecology UD Student Association, IFOAM Agribiomediterraneo Group. Slow Food Lleida and Unió de Pagessos are supporting the event.
