The institute will strengthen the interaction between research and economic life with multidisciplinary research, development projects, research-based education, science communication and with societal and economical engagement.
The coordinating organization of the institute for the first period, January 2013 to Devember 2016, will be the University of Helsinki. The steering committee of the institute will have members from the two founding organizations, both of which have a long tradition in research and development of organic food and farming in collaboration with local actors. In addition to two founding members, other organizations in the field can join the institute.
On November 1 and 2, 2012, the Ruralia Institute of the University of Helsinki, and MTT Agrifood Research Finland, hosted the Scientific Seminar on Organic Food – open, critical and collaborative approaches in Mikkeli. The seminar was directed to researchers, students and professionals interested in food research including multidisciplinary areas such as life-sciences and socio-economic sciences.
