Ecological Organic Agriculture Conference successfully concluded in Nairobi

Organized by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), the African Union (AU) and the Kenyan Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN), the international conference titled 'Ecological Organic Agriculture: The Alternative for Africa' was held at the Headquarters of the United Nations' Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya, from November 15 to 16, 2011. Over 200 participants from 24 countries attended.

The meeting was a great success: In addition to building awareness of accessible, productive and resilient organic farming systems, the conference helped build the alliances required to capitalize on the African Union's Resolution on Organic Farming and implement the "African Ecological Organic Agriculture Action Plan".

The participants of the conference adopted a conference declaration draft as an appeal to all stakeholders capable of unlocking the potential that ecological and people centered systems offer Africa.

At the conference, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) presented the African Organic Agriculture Training Manual. The presentation marks the beginning of a two-year validation process. FiBL has invited organizations involved in organic and sustainable agriculture training in Africa to test the materials.

Presentations, the conference declaration draft and other documents are available on the conference website.
