Report from the conference "Organic production, Research and Innovation: setting priorities for the future" at Expo Milano

The European Commission organised the conference "Organic production, Research and Innovation: setting priorities for the future", as foreseen in the Action Plan on organic food and farming , adopted by the Commission on 24 March 2014. This conference gave light on the needs and priorities in this sector and will provide the necessary input for the European Commission in developing further its research and innovation policies.

Expo Milano, Italy

On 28-29 May, the European Commission gathered over 170 farmers, farm advisers and researchers from all over Europe to prioritise needs for research and innovation in the organic food and farming sector.

The aim of the conference was to

  • bring together researchers, farmers, farm advisors and other stakeholders to discuss and share ideas and knowledge on research and innovation in the organic production sector and to
  • gather the research needs directly linked to the production of organic inputs, organic raw materials and organic products.

The priorities that came out of the conference can  be summarized as follows:

  • Improve  the  understanding  of  the  diversity  and  complexity  of  agro-eco-systems  in  order  to  reduce dependency on external inputs while maintaining productivity
  • Breed plant and animals adapted to low-input conditions and variable environments
  • Reduce use of antibiotics and concentrates in animal production
  • Improve animal health and welfareDesign appropriate processing technologies for organic food
  • Improve traceability and transparency in the organic food chain
  • Foster co-creation of knowledge and farmer-to-farmer learning

These outcomes will be used as input for the implementation of Horizon 2020 (ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon2020) and the Europrean Innovation Partnership EIP-AGI www.eip-agri.eu.
