November 4, 2010: International conference: Amino acid supply for poultry and pigs when feed is 100 percent organic

Aarhus, Denmark

As of 2012, feed for organic livestock must be 100 percent organic in the European Union. Advisers and scientists have for long called attention to the fact that it is no longer possible to compound feed which is balanced with the need for protein and amino acid with the present supply of organic ingredients.  Therefore it is necessary to to initiate a considerable production of organic high-value protein. Farmers and the feed industry acknowledge the problem.

Purpose of the conference

  • To describe the problem.
  • To indentify the organic protein sources which contribute with essential amino acid.
  • To evaluate the possibilities to produce larger amounts of organic high-value feedstuff.
  • To motivate organic farmers, the processing industry and the foodstuff industry to start production of organic high-value protein.
  • To initiate an action plan regarding production of organic high-value protein on an international / European basis.

The conference will cover the following aspects:

  • The amino acid impact on animal welfare and productivity.
  • Compound feed with and without conventional raw materials.
  • Organic maize- and hemp protein to be used as high-value protein for pigs and poultry.
  • Identification of other high-value protein sources, e.g. quinoa, sesame, clams, others?
  • How much high-value protein is required to cover the need in Scandinavia, Europe and worldwide?
  • The actual supply of high-value protein on the market.
  • The potential for growing and processing organic high-value protein in Scandinavia, Europe and worldwide.
  • What is done in the participating countries to solve the problem?
  • Is synthetic amino acid to be permitted?
  • Action plan for amino acid supply for pigs and poultry from 1 January 2012.

Everybody with an interest in the subject is invited to the conference. A special effort is put to invite experts and people with influence on the solution of the problem on an international / European basis, as well as representatives for organic organizations.
