President of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) Andre Leu addressed the on December 3, 2012 Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Doha, Qatar and explained how organic farming can safeguard food production in a changing climate.
IFOAM is establishing the global platform TIPI for mobilizing partnerships for research that empowers small-scale producers. Organic agriculture can alleviate poverty, meet food security and nutritional needs, and develop farming systems resilient to climate change.
Leu explained how organic agriculture helps to mitigate greenhouse gas problems by reducing carbon emissions and sequestering atmospheric carbon as soil organic matter. However, to meet these challenges, research and technology are needed to combine tradition with science.
