New app released to monitor soil health

SOILapp, a smartphone application intended to monitor soil health, has just been released. It allows observing soil conditions and, in particular, forecasting the effect of fertilization and other agronomic practices on the soil’s physical, chemical and biological conditions.

The app is aimed at farmers, farming networks, extension services as well as organic and biodynamic certification organisations. It supports the user in collecting, visualizing and exchanging examinations on soil health using the spade test, a widely used, qualitative method for analysing soil conditions. By recording soil observations, users can share their findings, learn from each other and seek further advice in the online community.

The app has been developed by the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Italy as well as Agroknow and ATHENA RC in Greece, in close collaboration with two farmers’ communities, in the framework of the Capsella project, which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 688813, and which is a collaborator of the FertilCrop project.
