Italy: Market grows by more than five percent in 2008

Italy's organic market continues to grow. In 2008, the Italians spent 5.4 percent more on organic products compared to the previous year. The growth, which must partly be attributed to higher prices, was however slower than in 2007, when the organic market grew by 10.2 percent.

In total, retail sales amounted to 1.97 billion Euros.

Growth was mainly in the vegetable and fruit sector, which had an increase of almost 20 percent. Other growth sectors were baby food, bread, pasta, rice and  eggs.

These figures were compiled by the Italian statistical office ISMEA and the market research company AC Nielsen and provided by the German Marketing and Price Reporting Office ZMP.
