In 2009 Peru had a total of 445,852 hectares dedicated to organic production. Of these 54,905 hectares were in process of transition and 390,947 hectares had organic certification (including wild collection). The departments of Junín, Cusco, and Loreto those have the largest areas under organic agricultural cultivation.
In the past three years, the organic market grew considerably, just like the number of organic farmers did. Most of the approximately 55,000 farmers are concentrated in the departments of Cusco, Cajamarca, and Junín.
The most important organic products are chestnut, coffee, palmito, cocoa, andean grains, and mangos, however, many other products are grown and exported in smaller quantities.
The National Authority, SENASA, supervises the activities of certification bodies that work in the country. In 2009, the certification bodies registered by SENASA were BCS Ôko Garantie Perú S.A.C., Control Union Perú S.A.C., IMO Control Latinoamerica Perú S.A.C. and International OCIA Perú S.A.C.
