The driving forces for the development of Czech organic farming are the subsidies paid within the agroenvironmental measures, the interest of traders in organic raw materials and the development of the Czech organic market.
The Czech Republic has a sufficient number of experts in organic plant and animal production, organic food processing and marketing. Consultancy and education are also well developed. There are accredited advisory, inspection and certification organizations.
At present approximately 450'000 hectares of land are farmed organically, representing 10.5 percent of the total agricultural agricultural land, which is considerably higher than the EU average (4.7 percent in 2009).
There are about 3'500 Czech agricultural enterprisesvarying significantly in size, with predominantly grassland. However, the number of cash crops producers has been increasing.
There are small organic farms of just 5 hectares, but also former cooperative or state farms with more than 1000 hectares. In many aspects the Czech Republic is the leader in the field of organic farming among the new members of the European Union.
