Austria: Organic retail sales data for 2014 and 2015 now available

At the Biofach trade fair in February 2017, new market data for Austria were published. Furthermore area data and producers numbers for 2016 were recently released by the ministry of agriculture.

For Austria, updated market data had not been available for a while. AMA-Marketing, in collaboration with the sector organisation BIO Austria, has now compiled data for the total retail sales in 2014 and 2015. According to these data, retail sales of organic products amounted to 1.3 billion euros ion 2015 (1.2 billion in 2014). The organic market share is 7 % (for general retailers). Catering constitutes 80 million euros in 2015 (70 in 2014); this is 1.8 percent of the total catering turnover.

In 2016, according to the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture, 21’820 farmers were organic, managing 571’585 hectares of farmland. This is approximately 22 % of the total farmland and an increase of 5 % compared with 2015.
