The organically managed area continues to grow in Austria but the current demand for organic products cannot be met. Therefore a new action plan for organic food and farming 2008-2010 was recently launched. Austria aims to remain the EU's number one country in terms of share of the organic area (16 % according to the ministry; 371'000 hectares).
The objectives of the action plan are:
- to provide an overall strategy for the development of the organic sector.
- to achieve an organic share of 20 % of the agricultural area by 2010;
- to communicate the enviromental benefits of organic farming to the consumers;
- to enhance rentabililty of organic farming.
