Austria: Organic market increases by more than 6 percent in 2008

In Austria, the turnover with organic food increased by more than six percent in 2008, according to FiBL, Agricultura and Bio Austria.

The total market (including exports and catering) was worth 914 million Euros in 2008, compared to 860 in 2007.

The domestic market (excluding catering) was worth 810 million Euros in 2008.

The distribution by sales channels was as follows:

  • General retail trade: 607 million Euros, +10.4 percent  compared to 2007.
  • Specialised trade: 140 million Euros, no change compared to 2007.
  • Direct marketing: 63 million Euros, -10 percent compared to 2007.
  • Catering: 44 million Euros, + 10 percent compared to 2007.
  • Export: 60 million Euros, no change compared to 2007.

In 2007, the domestic organic market was valued at 739 million Euros. The share of the organic food market of the total food market was 5.3 percent. The average per capita spending was 89 Euros per person annually, according to Aberystwyth University, FiBL and ZMP (Padel et al. 2009).*
