Kyrgyzstan: Organic cotton

The BioFach Newsletter reports in its latest edition, that an organic cotton project was started in Kyrgyzstan six years ago after conventional cotton production had severely damaged the Aral Sea.

The farms involved in the project currently farm 1'102 hectares, of these 442 hectares are for growing cotton. Certification is carried out by the certification body Indocert. 57 ton of organic and fairtrade cotton fibres and 217 tons of fair trade conversion products were exported to Europe by the end of the growing year 2008.

The Organic Farmers Union, to which the farmers belong, has been recognized as a fairtrade partner by the certification body FLO-CERT since October 2008.

The Swiss aid organization Helvetas, which coordinates the project, is now planning marketing campaigns for organic cotton products in Switzerland.

Note

According to the latest FiBL and IFOAM Survey in 2007 14'000 hectares were under management. These figures are based on the data of one certifier; the Indocert data had not been included.  In the table with the revised data for 2007 the figure is corrected (<link fileadmin documents data-sheets-public download file>table).
