The German organic market continues to grow, even though at a reduced speed. There has been no recognizable decline of the organic market, either 2008 or during the first half of 2009, concludes Markus Rippin (Agromilagro), who together with Ulrich Hamm, professor at Kassel University, examines the size of the organic food market every year.

Despite slight growth in sales, the organic food retail trade maintained its market share of 22 percent in 2008. This is shown by the provisional statistics, according to which organic food sector sales have increased from 1.18 billion EUR to 1.26 billion EUR.

The conventional retail food trade grew by 4 percent to 57 percent the organic market.  The conventional retail food trade is up from 2.8 billion to 3.36 billion EUR.

Total sales in the organic sector in 2008 are stated as 5.85 billion Euros compared with the previous 5.3 billion Euros.

Direct marketing, craft trade and spefood stores have declined in terms of both absolute figures and market share. Hamm and Rippin also see no signs of falling sales in the first half of 2009.
