Germany: Market and production data 2009 published

The German Federation of the Organic Food Industry BOELW has recently published the latest market and production data for Germany.

The data were compiled at the occasion of the Green Week, the largest agricultural fair in Germany. 

These preliminary data show:

  • The overall turnover with organic products in Germany remained at the same level as in 2008 or even decreased slightly.
  • The volume of organic products sold did, however, increase.
  • Whereas the general retail trade and the discounters reported less sales of organic products than in 2008, the specialized organic retail trade grew by four percent.
  • The total food market decreased by 2.4 percent, decrease was lower in the organic food market.

BOELW also presented the latest data on land managed by organic farms that are member of one of the associations that are part of the BOELW: The number of these organic farms increased by six percent, and the organic land by 5.2 percent. If the farms that only work according to EU regulation on organic farming are included the total is approximately 21'000 farms (5.9 percent) managing 950'000 hectares (5.6 percent). Government figures on the land under organic management and the number of farms in Germany are expected to be published by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection early summer 2010.
