Taiwan: Organic agriculture a growing business for Taiwan’s farms

The Taipe Times reports, that choosing organic foods has become more than just a fad in recent years, as the latest statistics from the Agriculture and Food Agency show.

Land dedicated to organic foods has grown significantly: In 2001 organic agriculture comprised 898 hectares compared to 3'056 hectares in April 2010.

Vegetables have seen the fastest growth in the last nine years with 5.5 times as much land now being used. In 2001, organic vegetables took up only 171 hectares compared to 944 hectares now.

The director-general of the Agriculture and Food Agency, Tsai Ching-chiang, said consumers have begun to favor organic agricultural products and that this consumption trend has influenced farming practices.
