Switzerland: Market grows by 5.3 percent in 2012

On April 10 the Swiss organic umbrella organisation Bio Suisse presented the latest data on organic agriculture in Switzerland.

According to these data the organic land and the number of organic producers has slightly increased. More than 6000 farm are working organically, constituting 11.3 percent of all farms in the country. In the canton of Grisons, 55 percent of the farms are organic. The land under organic management has increased to 124‘000 hectares or 11.6 percent of the agricultural land.

The retail sales increased by 5.3 percent and are now at 1.823 billion Swiss Francs or approximately 1.5 billion Euros. The retailer Coop accounts for almost half of the market (47.5 percent), followed by Migros (26.4 percent) and other retailers (4 percent). Specialized organic retailers have 12.9 percent of the market and direct marketing accounts for 5.5 percent.

The share of the total food market is 6.3 percent (up from 6 in 2011); for fresh products 8.5 percent. The best sold products are eggs (20.5 percent of the market), followed by fresh bread (8.8 percent), vegetables including potatoes (12.9 percent) and dairy products (10.1 percent). With the exception of cheese and bakery products all product groups increased.
